A sad chronicle of the Ryukyu Kingdom turning into Okinawa Prefecture, jwchune · 2021. 2. 8. 12:52 A decade after the Imjin War, Satsuma invaded and subjugated the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1609. Since then, Satsuma has made significant profits from the import of Indus-like tributes from Ryukyu and intermediary trade through Ryukyu. However, there was still the Ryukyu king, and he continues to pay tributes to China. In the early 19th century, more than 250 years after Satsuma conquered Ryukyu, Satsuma forcibly mobilized locals like slaves in the Amami Islands, which were taken from Ryukyu, and created a sugar cane collective farm to produce brown sugar. They harshly run a collective farm, banning rice cultivation as a staple food. Then, the Meiji government discovered that the Qing Dynasty did not strongly claim Ryukyu as Chinese territory. That’s when Japan came to think, ‘Let’s make Ryukyu a complete Japanese territory’. And a year later, in 1875, the Meiji government intimidated King Ryukyu into imposing the ten Mazda provisions. It’s like the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905 that Joseon imposed in 1905 30 years later. Perhaps the ten Mazda provisions were the original version of the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905.
